“It Takes A Village: Moving Baltimore Youth Forward, Together”
On April 9, 2016, Attorney Keisha A. Garner, along with the other 2015-2016 Maryland State Bar Leadership Academy Fellows, organized and held a half-day symposium entitled “It Takes A Village: Moving Baltimore Youth Forward, Together”, which gathered Baltimore City’s community leaders, pastors, teachers, educators, administrators, coaches, judges, law enforcement and parents to have a frank discussion regarding the underlying issues and causes that lead Baltimore City’s youth to have contact with the juvenile justice system.
The symposium provided interactive and organized panel discussions of the issues plaguing our youth and provided tools and creative solutions to the common problems facing the kids of Baltimore. Participants heard the youth perspective in a short docu-film featuring students from Baltimore City high schools. In addition to the forum discussions, the symposium provided a free lunch to pre-registered attendees and a Community Resource Fair. The fair included a wide variety of community organizations dedicated to providing resources and programs for Baltimore City’s youth. Attendees had an opportunity to casually meet with these vendors, collect information or engage their services.
